FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
City of Glasgow Awarded $100,000 to Improve Stormwater Infrastructure on Trojan Trail
Funding to Address Flooding and Environmental Concerns Through Green Infrastructure Solutions
Glasgow, KY – September 5, 2024– The City of Glasgow is excited to announce it has been awarded $100,000 in state funding through Governor Andy Beshear’s initiative to enhance stormwater infrastructure and improve environmental conditions. This funding, provided through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act’s Sewer Overflow and Stormwater Reuse Municipal Grant (OSG) Program, will focus on improving the stormwater management and flood prevention systems along Trojan Trail.
This grant will allow the city to develop engineering plans aimed at reducing the flooding issues that have long impacted the Trojan Trail area. The project will utilize green infrastructure, incorporating nature-based solutions to better manage stormwater, protect public health, and safeguard Glasgow’s local environment.
“We are thrilled to receive this critical funding to address the stormwater challenges along Trojan Trail,” said Henry Royse, Glasgow Mayor. “Flooding has been a significant issue in this area, and this grant allows us to implement sustainable, long-term solutions that will not only reduce flooding but also improve water quality and protect our community’s health and environment.”
The OSG Program prioritizes rural and financially distressed communities and focuses on projects that incorporate green infrastructure, such as rain gardens, permeable pavements, and other innovative stormwater management techniques. By integrating these nature-based solutions, the City of Glasgow aims to reduce the strain on its sewer systems, improve flood control, and promote environmental sustainability.
April Russell, City Administrator, emphasized the importance of this project for the community: “The flooding along Trojan Trail has been a persistent problem for Barren County Schools, residents and businesses in the area. This grant gives us the resources to plan and design a system that not only addresses the immediate issues but also provides lasting environmental benefits. We’re looking forward to seeing how these improvements will help make Glasgow more resilient.”
With this funding, Glasgow joins several other Kentucky cities in making important strides toward better stormwater management and infrastructure upgrades. The city’s commitment to protecting the health and well-being of its residents and environment is at the core of this initiative.
The project’s engineering and design phase is expected to be completed by September 2026. For more information on the stormwater infrastructure project or other environmental initiatives in Glasgow, please contact April Russell 270-651-5131 or Jim McGowan 270-651-5977.
